There’s also a real difference between fructose made by tumor cells inside the body and fructose eaten at the dinner table. The study shows tumor-produced fructose acting locally on nearby cells. Whether sugar from food reaches that same tissue in high enough amounts to matter is a separate question nobody has answered yet.
What Comes Next For Patients And Researchers
The Wistar team says the discovery opens new research directions rather than settling the matter. Follow-up work needs to measure fructose levels directly in ovarian cancer patients’ tumor fluid and blood, both before and after chemotherapy, to see if the mouse findings hold up in humans.
Researchers also want to know if blocking fructose production or its effects on cholesterol could stop cancer from spreading without harming healthy tissue. Some scientists suspect a similar pattern could show up in other abdominal cancers, including pancreatic, liver, and colorectal disease, though that remains an open question rather than a finding.
Until human studies confirm a real connection between dietary sugar and cancer spread, patients shouldn’t panic over an orange or a soda.
